How to Get Your First Web3 Job

The Web3 industry is growing rapidly, and companies are actively looking for talented developers, designers, and product managers. Getting your first role in this space requires a combination of technical skills, domain knowledge, and strategic networking.

1. Build relevant skills Start with the fundamentals: understand how blockchain works, what DeFi protocols do, and how smart contracts function. Free resources like the Ethereum documentation, CryptoZombies for Solidity, and the Paradigm CTF challenges are excellent starting points.

2. Create on-chain proof Unlike Web2, Web3 values public, verifiable contributions. Contribute to open-source protocols on GitHub. Even documentation fixes count. If you have a portfolio, publish it on IPFS or link your GitHub contributions. Every on-chain signal helps.

3. Network intentionally Join Discord servers of projects you admire. Attend ETHGlobal hackathons. Follow and engage with protocol team members on Twitter. Many roles are filled through referrals, not job boards.

4. Target the right roles Be realistic about your experience level. "Smart Contract Developer" might be aspirational if you're new — consider DevRel, QA, or protocol analyst roles as stepping stones. Companies like Uniswap, Aave, and OpenSea have robust internship and new-grad programs.

5. Prepare for non-traditional interviews Web3 interviews often include live coding (write a vault or AMM invariant), system design for protocols, and discussions about your favorite DeFi apps. Know the difference between an AMM and a CEX. Understand impermanent loss.

6. Evaluate total compensation Many Web3 roles offer a token component. A $150k salary might come with $80k in tokens vesting over 4 years. Use our compensation calculator to understand the real value, and always consider token price volatility.
